Ride Across Indiana
160 mile Ride Across Indian, also known as RAIN although there wasn’t a drop in sight (except those falling from my brow). I joined Jim Doran and his wife Sylvia in Nashville, and we motorhomed up to Terra Haute where we spent the night at KOA campground.
Saturday morning not sure what to expect or how well I was prepared, Jim and I started about 1/3 the way back in a mile long pack and rode at a measured pace of about 16 mph.
But after being passed up by so many, and not able to hold back, a down hill begged me to Superman, and from then on I peddled at my normal pace. Through the day I rode with many different groups, some pull me along at 22 mph. At times I rode alone, all the while surrounded by corn, soybeans, and an open road ahead. The freedom exceeded any misery of 97 degree heat, humidity or the occasional head wind. The hills there were very deceiving, not realizing you were climbing, you would struggle to keep you speed up, only to crest and fly down the other side. The final 20 miles was peddled with Joe from Carmel, we were very equally paced, taking turns with the lead, at times side by side.
Together we arrived at the end in just over 9 1/2 hours, tired but not totally exhausted. And how did the bike get so dirty?
