Duke's First Century
Saturday Duke and I rode the WC Handy Fest Century.
Gathering near the front of the group start, we hooked into 14 man double wide pace line and clicked off the first 18 miles at a quick 22 mph pace. Crossing over the Tennessee River and charging up Freedom Hill towards the Mississippi State Line, the pace line began to fragment into smaller groups. Having to peddle down hill, Duke concluded that the WC stood for Windy Cycling…it seamed we had a head wind for each leg of the ride.
Just to make sure Duke was going to get the full 100 miles, we took the wrong exit off the Trace returning back to Florence but just considered it the Hammerhead Option. Picking our way back to Hwy 2, we were motivated the final 10 miles by dark looming thunderheads, and finally with a tailwind, cruised at 26 mph back to the park for 102 miles. Just beating the heavy rains.
Congrats Duke on your first Century!
